Darlington Raceway announced today that the family of the Wood Brothers Racing team will serve as the Grand Marshals for the Goodyear 400 this Sunday. Celebrating their 75th anniversary alongside the Track Too Tough to Tame, the pioneer team of the NASCAR Cup Series will say the most famous words in motorsports ahead of the main event of The Official Throwback Weekend of NASCAR.
Legacy Motor Club filed a lawsuit Tuesday against Rick Ware Racing as the two NASCAR Cup Series teams clash over a charter purchase gone awry.
…
Legacy said the teams met on Jan. 6 to strike a deal and signed it on March 3 after agreeing on payment terms. Exact figures were not disclosed publicly, but charters have been sold at valuations of up to $40 million. And now, Legacy claims, RWR has cold feet.
…
According to multiple sources familiar with the lawsuit but not authorized to speak publicly, the dispute centers around the timing of when the charter would be transferred from RWR to Legacy, which is owned by seven-time Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson. RWR is said to have been under the impression the agreement would go into effect for 2027, but Legacy changed the year to 2026 without communicating to team owner Ware or other RWR representatives it had done so.
NASCAR has penalized Sammy Smith 50 points and fined him $25,000 for wrecking Taylor Gray from the lead on the final lap of last weekend’s Xfinity Series race at Martinsville Speedway. The penalty drops Smith from sixth in the points to 13th in the points heading into Saturday’s race at Darlington Raceway. Smith turned Gray’s car entering Turn 3 last weekend at Martinsville and triggered a multi-car crash as the field came to the finish line.
“I thought he would have done the same to me,” Smith said after the race. “He moved me if I was in the lead. That’s what you have to do. If you don’t do that, you’re going to be the one getting run over. “I know that everyone is going to mad and upset at me and say I’m a dirty driver, but I don’t care because everybody does it. If I was just going to accept it and finish second today, then that just wasn’t going to set well with me.”
Smith’s actions sparked anger from competitors about what he did and the state of racing in the Xfinity Series. Cup driver Denny Hamlin criticized the racing and called for NASCAR to step in during the race. Hamlin wrote on social media that “Martinsville is a track that could use a (sic) “avoidable contact” penalty. He also wrote on social media: “God I wish I were in the (TV) booth. Id (sic) get fired but I damn sure would call these idiots out.” Xfinity winner Austin Hill said after the race: “I think at the end of the day when it’s a green-white-checkered at a Martinsville race, the respect and stuff is out the window and I hate to say that. I really do. I’m probably not the best one to speak on it, but I wish there was a way we could settle it down a little more to where it wasn’t so just beating and banging and knocking each other’s doors off and running through people. I wish we could race a different way at Martinsville than what we do.” Said Joey Logano on Tuesday on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio about Smith’s actions on the final lap: “Going from two car lengths back and straight up dumping someone. Not acceptable. That’s not aggressive driving. That’s demolition derby. That’s unprofessional.”

NASCAR All-Star Open and Race practice sessions kick off All-Star Friday presented by Raymer Oil on May 16, with the NASCAR Pit Crew Challenge presented by Mechanix Wear – a race against the clock for drivers and crews to set the Heat Race fields – and a Friday-night zMAX CARS Tour Late Model Stock Car nightcap taking the spotlight. For the first time, a nationwide cable television audience will witness the zMAX CARS Tour’s eclectic mix of household names and rising stars, with FS1 broadcasting the race live Friday night. NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. will join fellow zMAX CARS Tour co-owner and NASCAR legend Kevin Harvick in the announcers’ booth for what is sure to be the preeminent event on the zMAX CARS Tour schedule.
The weekend lineup starts Saturday, May 17, with Window World 250 NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series practice, qualifying and race followed by All-Star Heat Races and a post-race Jake Owen concert on the infield frontstretch presented by Raymer Oil.
Sunday begins with a new addition to All-Star weekend, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. NWMT practice, qualifying and a 150-lap feature will be followed by the high-octane All-Star Open, where the top two finishers transfer into the main event—the NASCAR All-Star Race under the lights.
Darlington Raceway announced today that NASCAR Hall of Famer Carl Edwards will serve as the honorary starter for the Goodyear 400 on Sunday, the flagship event of The Official Throwback Weekend of NASCAR. Edwards notoriously won the coveted 2015 Southern 500 to close out the inaugural Throwback Weekend at the Track Too Tough to Tame.
32 years ago, I was working out of state in Kingman, AZ on a project for the company I worked for. As I was sorting and matching parts, etc, the mail girl came through and asked me if I had heard about Alan Kulwicki. As a race fan also, I said no and asked what it was about. She told me he had been killed in a plane crash. I honestly thought she was pulling an April Fool’s joke and laughed. She came over and hugged me and said “I am serious.” At that point, a couple of the warehouse fellows came up and said “Alan got killed this morning.” We quickly turned on the radio and listened to the news and details…needless to say, that day at work dragged and a lot of memories were discussed…
Not a lot of things were worse though than that night in a motel watching tv alone and feeling sad and still unbelieving. Don and I talked on phone and discussed how precious life is and that we should always remember that.
Although I can smile, I still think of April Fool’s Day as a sad day.

Update: LEGACY MOTOR CLUB will not appeal the disqualification of the No. 43 car following Sunday’s race at Martinsville Speedway. We understand NASCAR allows a clear margin to account for the difference in pre- and post-race weight. After a thorough audit by the CLUB today, we have concluded that we did not give ourselves enough margin to meet the post-race requirement. Although it was not intentional, we are taking steps internally to prevent this from happening again. We therefore accept the penalty and apologize to NASCAR, our partners and our fans.
NASCAR Cup Series drivers have a vested interest in how NASCAR reacts to the finish of Saturday’s Xfinity Series race at Martinsville Speedway.
They want to see how NASCAR handles Sammy Smith knocking Taylor Gray out of the way for the lead in the final turn, resulting in both of them wrecking and Austin Hill slipping by for win. They need to see if NASCAR reacts for two main reasons:
— How and if the league penalizes Smith could indicate how it would rule if similar instances happen in the Cup Series.
— Any penalties will send a message to up-and-coming drivers on what NASCAR considers out of bounds.
“The sanctioning body needs to get involved a little bit and step in on egregious things,” said Denny Hamlin, who won the Cup race at Martinsville. “I think it’s continued to ramp up, right? We’ve seen this stuff.
“It used to only happen on green-white-checkereds. Then this place, it seemed like inside 20 [laps] to go, people would lose their minds. Those guys yesterday did it with 50 to go, absolutely just creaming each other. It was just horrible driving by most of the people out there. It’s just not a good look.”
Hamlin knows something about penalties for intentionally wrecking another driver when it is not a dangerous right-rear hook. He was docked 25 points for intentionally wrecking Ross Chastain to gain positions in the final laps at Phoenix in 2023.
Last year, Austin Dillonhad contact with Joey Loganoand Hamlin between Turn 4 and the finish line at Richmond. Dillon was also docked 25 points and wasn’t allowed to use the win for an automatic bid to the playoffs. Smith appeared to deliver a hard bump to Gray with no attempt to just get him loose to get by. He finished in 10th place. Taylor Gray was 29th, so a points penalty just to even things out could potentially be viewed as appropriate. “I’m not proud of what I did,” Smith said. But Smith also said he felt that is what he had to do to win the race. “I know everyone is going to be mad and upset at me and say I’m a dirty driver, but I don’t care because everybody does it,” Smith said. “And if I was just going to accept it and finish second today, then that just wasn’t going to sit well with me.” What Smith did didn’t sit well with many. Historically, racing is full of instances where race officials have to make calls on rough driving. And NASCAR’s emphasis on winning — especially when a playoff spot is on the line — has made drivers go beyond what they would normally believe is acceptable. League officials didn’t penalize Smith after the race but indicated they would take a look at it during their evaluation of the race weekend.
NASCAR Senior Vice President Elton Sawyer told the Cup drivers during the meeting prior to their race: “Based on the truck race and last night, my key word will be respect.” The Cup drivers certainly had their moments of frustration with each other, but the race didn’t seem to get to the point of ridiculousness. “The Cup drivers respect each other more,” said Cup runner-up Christopher Bell. “[That Xfinity race] was absolutely infuriating. My blood was boiling inside the motorhome watching it. It was a disgrace for our sport, and that should not be tolerated. “Not just the last lap, but the whole thing. We’ve got to hold ourselves to better standards. That was embarrassing.” Smith drives for JR Motorsports, and team co-owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. posted on X after several of the wrecks (before the last-lap debacle) that the race was not up to standards. Bell made it a point at Circuit of the Americas to try to win in a clean manner. No Cup race has had an incident such as Dillon’s Richmond finish. “The Cup races have been good, and they’ve been really fair and clean,” Bell said. The drivers in the Xfinity Series also appear to know they need some stronger boundaries.
“Everybody is beating everybody’s doors off,” Hill said. “We’re just running into each other. … I had so much front-end damage, rear damage by the end of the race. It’s just comical to me how much we destroy our race cars.”
I’m sick and tired of the whole dumping the leader to win thing nascar have created with it’s “win’n your in” thing and the stupid “play-off” so hoping for some kind of line here! AND I’m ALSO tired of the spinless media nuts time after time asking driver “what they are willing to do” to get that so elusive win that would get them there, even due the know and feel inside it’s wrong!!! FORE once media people Take a stand and stop bend over to nascar!!! Sorry long rant here! Needed the went! //B
im thinking your saying what everyone else is thinking
it suks now a days to see that bump and win
but not always when our driver wins after a bump and run
bump then crash em out then win is wrong , even though my driver could win . ive never cared for that .
but that is a close line at times between hard beating banging racing and just slamming someone to pass them
And the fact that those “new cars” that was supposed to fix the aero-sensitive problem is even worse the previous doesn’t help getting them loose is the only way to pass with that much underpowered “car”!!
